2007 Otago Schools Orienteering Championships

The Otago Schools Orienteering Championships were held on Sunday 1 April 2007 at Waikouaiti. The Waikouaiti map is a great mixture of park, forest and sand dunes, and provides a good variety of challenges. There are open areas where speed is important and areas of thicker vegetation that are slower. There are areas where reading the linear features is sufficient and areas of complex contour detail which require skilled map-reading. There are no significant hills so times are generally fast. The event was held in ideal conditions with the day being cloudy and pleasantly mild. This benefited the large contingent of parents and supporters as well as the competitors.

The Secondary Schools Section

The senior (Yr 11-13) boys title was won by Ryan Cambridge of Kings High School, who blitzed the field by twelve minutes. Ryan has dominated the school series this year and once again no-one could even get close to his time. He is now the third member of the Cambridge family to take the Otago Schools title. Vincent Pettinger, also of Kings High came second as expected but Matthew Mortimer of Taieri College pulled off a minor upset when he narrowly beat Bede Robertson of Kings for third. Sylie McNab of Kavanagh College unfortunately had no competition for the senior girls title however she showed her class by running a time that beat all but the two fastest boys.

The junior (Yr 9-10) boys title was won by Clarke Fulton of Bayfield High School who had a particularly good run and had a margin of nearly five minutes. Michael Ogle of Otago Boys who has dominated the school series this year in this grade had a poor run and could only manage third while Hamish McMecking also of Otago Boys narrowly took second place. This result was definitely the biggest upset of the day. The junior girls section of the school series this year, was dominated by Otago Girls and St Hildas. The St Hildas girls were unable to come to the championships and this resulted in a small section. However the title was won, largely as expected, by Millie Cowan of Otago Girls High School, from Sarah Hawker-Lawrence, also of Otago Girls.

The Intermediate (or year 7 & 8) Schools Section

The intermediate boys title was won by Oliver Jordan of John McGlashan College from James Brundell, also of John McGlashan and Brad Robertson of Kaikorai Valley College who was third. This section attracted a large group from Tokomairiro for the first time this year in the school series but they chose not to enter the championship grade at this event. The intermediate girls title was won by Emily Buschl who had a particularly good run and beat all but one of the boys. Aslyn Brown of Balmacewan Intermediate came second but had a very disappointing run.

The Primary Schools Section

The primary girls title was won in a very good time by Anna O'Leary of Tainui School. She is a relative newcomer to the sport but proved her ability with a run that blitzed not just the other girls but also all of the boys. Thirteen minutes adrift, Georgia Buschl of Outram School was second and Charlotte Cotter of East Taieri was third just a minute further back. The boys title was won by Hamish Cotter from James Logie, second and Tom Logie, third. These boys are all from East Taieri School.
